Today’s Text: 1 Timothy 6:6
“Now godliness with contentment is great gain.”
I Timothy 6:6 NKJV
Contentment means satisfaction with what someone has, it also means sufficiency and self-satisfaction.
From Philippians 4:11-13, we learn that for a Christian, contentment is independent of the presence of possession or an absence/lack of it.
“Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:11-13
We learn from Apostle Paul in 1 Timothy 6:6, that it is beneficial, profitable, and a gain to mix a life of godliness with contentment. This sort of living is like a procurement, a good purchase, wealth or ‘money-getting’.
For anyone to live a truly content life; there must be an assurance or conviction of a steady supply of needs that’s beyond one’s self and capability. Apostle Paul’s sense of contentment was deeply rooted in his firm trust in Christ’ empowerment.
“I have strength for all things in Christ Who empowers me [I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him Who infuses inner strength into me; I am self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency].” Philippians 4:13 AMPC
Some of the gains and benefits of contentment we can tease out from scripture including 1 Timothy 6:6-10 are;
▫️preservation of our faith/belief
▫️protection of our joy/peace and
▫️protection from covetousness.
To imbibe and enjoy a life of contentment as Christians,
▫️we must learn to check our desires and put them under control,
▫️we must learn to be thankful for the little (basic) things of life which God generously supplies to those who love and walk according to His word,
▫️we must be confident, assured that God in His faithfulness will supply all our needs, and
▫️we must by faith ask and believe God for the things we desire.
To enjoy everything God has made available to us in Christ Jesus, we must walk by faith, and mix faith with patience (James 1:3, Hebrews 6:12).
Praise the Lord!
