Trials are troubles, tribulations, persecutions from the devil that come to a true believer in Christ Jesus to weaken your strength and focus. Though trials are attacks from the enemy, God sees them as tests. You cannot be a true Christian and not have trials. The ‘3 Qualities You Must Possess During Trials’ are necessary for every Christian going through trials.
Trials come from the enemy. There are 3 Qualities listed in this verse that Apostle James wants every believer to possess when going through trials….
- Quick to hear…Attentiveness
- Slow to speak….Quietness
- Slow to wrath….Self-Control
“So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath” James 1:19
This verse starts with ‘so then’ meaning it’s a continuation of what has been said before. The context of this verse is James teaching on Trials, temptations and tests. In verses 1-4, James says to rejoice in trials because it’s a test that produces patience He encourages us that trials and tests can be beneficial to the believer because it produces patience.
Now there are 5 words I want to highlight regarding trials and tests as mentioned in James 1;
- Patience
- Faith
- Wisdom
- Approved
- Crown
While patience is a benefit of trials from God’s perspective, Faith and Wisdom are necessary ingredients for surviving, overcoming and triumphing over trials. You need a firm assurance in God and His Word in order to seize your victory…this is faith. In addition to faith and wisdom you need these….’3 qualities you must possess in trials’ in order to come out victorious.
Wisdom means the right application of knowledge, that is; knowing what to do…
1. Quick To Hear (Attentiveness)
If you are presently going through any trial, you have to adopt a
A. Quick To Hear disposition is necessary during trials because you need to hear what God is saying. How He is leading you, how to get over the trial. You need wisdom to tide over trials and wisdom comes from God and His Word. This wisdom is not natural wisdom but that which comes from God coming from the Holy Spirit. Verse 5 tells us God gives wisdom liberally. You need wisdom to overcome trials. And since this wisdom comes from the Holy Spirit, you need to be QUICK TO LISTEN…Be attentive.
2. Slow To Speak
Going through trials, you need to be slow to speak. Why? So you don’t speak foolishly. And really, If you don’t know what to say pray in tongues. Praise God. But don’t speak foolishly. So you don’t worsen the situation with wrong, negative and faithless words..
3. Slow To Wrath
Anger, strife, wrath occurring during one’s trial are simply distractions. This is very important because Trials come from the devil. But God turns them around for our good.
So …
What’s important during trials is to
1. know what to do…. Wisdom.
2. Know what To say…
3. Avoid distractions
