God’s instructions in Genesis 2:17 was clear, there is no record Adam asked for clarification…
“but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
Genesis 2:17 NKJV.
…..’Don’t eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil Adam, maintain your current state of innocence and sinless ness, for where there is no law there can be no sin.’
Without a knowledge of good and evil, Adam couldn’t be charged with wrongdoing. The tree of the knowledge of good and evil, is true to its name; its eater will become knowledgeable of the difference between good and evil. The way I see it, there is really nothing wrong with becoming knowledgeable, however, the other implication of eating this tree is that the eater must always choose to do good or be charged with sin.
The devil is tricky; that’s his consistent strategy. Now, knowing it would be foolish to totally discard what God said to Adam, the devil chose instead to add ‘a little seemingly harmless twist‘ to God’s command. Sadly, Eve bought into it.
“Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”
Genesis 3:1 NKJV
You see, the devil’s ‘has God indeed said‘ didn’t come to confirm to Eve what God said, rather, it came to offer Eve an opportunity to reconsider what God said. The devil was making obvious to Eve other possibilities of what God meant. In our walk with God, we must be sensitive to recognize distractions as they come.
Eve fell prey to the devil’s trap, she even further elaborated on God’s command. Notice the almost negligible addition Eve made to Genesis 2:17; ‘nor shall you touch it‘. God did not forbid them from touching the tree.. .
Eve created the window of opportunity the devil was hoping for in order to steal their God-given destiny.
Eve’s lie immediately positioned her in the devil’s camp and the devil took full advantage of it.
Look at the baits the enemy dangled at Eve …..
“So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.“
Genesis 3:6 NKJV
Food. Pleasure. Knowledge. Wealth.
I believe these are still some of the baits the devil dangles at Christians.
A little lie, tiny falsification of information, plagiarism, some careless sex, false balancing of accounts, little sins, big sins,……and the devil gradually gains control.
May we be wise, because the thief only comes to steal, kill and destroy….
“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy….“
John 10:10b NKJV
