The new covenant law is the law of love; to love God and to love man (Matthew 22:37). And loving God is subsumed under loving man because we cannot say that we love God whom we haven’t seen, if we are not walking in love towards our neighbour (1 John 4:20-21). To maximize the benefits of walking in love discussed below we have to love others just as God demonstrated love to us in Christ Jesus (Romans 5:8).
1. Walking in love powers our faith
As we know, faith is the confirmation or conviction of things we hope for even though we have not physically seen them (Hebrews 11:1). This assurance of the reality of invisible things perceived as real isn’t based on feelings, facts or human data, but on the infallible Word of God (Romans 10:19). Faith is activated by speaking and acting on God’s Word (Mark 11:22-23).
For the believer faith is as important as the air necessary for living; the just lives by faith (Romans 1;7), faith is necessary for inheriting all of God’s promises (Hebrews 6:12), and it is through faith that the believer overcomes the world (1 John 5:4).
Doubt is a miracle stealer and snatcher, and not walking in love cripples our faith. This is because faith works through love (Galatians 5:6), and faith is baseless and dead without acts of love (James 2:17).
Friends, love powers faith, love is greater than faith and faith will not work without love.
2. Walking in love guarantees answered prayers
In Mark 11:25-26, the Lord Jesus emphasizes the importance of forgiveness in receiving answers to prayers. First Corinthians 13:5 shows us that forgiveness is an expression of love as love keeps no record of wrongs. Therefore, to have our prayers answered, we must freely forgive one another just as God in Christ Jesus forgave us.
3. Walking in love preserves our health
The body of Christ is one (1 Corinthians 12:12-17). We must be discerning to understand that partaking of the communion is our assention to the truth of this oneness. Not working in love towards a fellow believer means working against oneself which according to 1 Corinthians 11:30 exposes us to sickness and death.
Friends, understanding these benefits of walking in love and living by them, helps us experience the victories of our faith.
