Dictionary.com defines opposition as the action of opposing, resisting, or combating. It also means antagonism or hostility. Opposition can also be a person or group of people opposing, criticizing, or protesting something, someone, or another group. Any how we read it, opposition is not usually seen as something or someone complimetary or contributing to a goal or vision. In Matthew chapter 5 verse 44, Jesus provides a kingdom approach to dealing with opposition- how to deal with opposition God’s way.
“But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you” Matthew 5:44, NKJV
The natural human approach to handling any form of opposition may include to;
- Fight back
- Resist the opposition
- Put back the pressure
- Quarrel
- Show them you’re not foolish or weak
- Proof a point, etc…
However, by recommending a different kind of response to opposition, Jesus proscribes the naturally expected and common response. He says to;
- Love them
- Bless them
- Do good to them
- Pray for them
Notice the 5 groups of opposition Jesus mentions in Matthew 5:44..
- Enemies
- Cursers
- Haters
- Users
- Persecutors
Every form of opposition will present as any of this listed groups. In rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, Nehemiah faced great opposition. This short study shines some light on the FACES of Nehemiah’s opposition, I assure you that you will recognize the oppositions in your as one of the presentations discussed. How ever they present, it is quite peacefull to learn how to deal with opposition God’s Way.
Friends, any response to opposition that is outside of the recommendations of Jesus in Matthew 5:44, is inconsistent with who God is. For God Is LOVE.
