If you can do everything by yourself, then you don’t need anybody’s help, and surely, you will be in this world alone. Fortunately or otherwise, this is not the case. We are all designed to need help from others. Sometimes though, we can be in situations where no man, made-made system, institution or establishment can help us. At such times, it’s important to remember God as an ever-present help.
Ahaziah king of Samaria found himself in a situation where he couldn’t help himself and it looked like no other man could (2 Kings 1:1-6). After experiencing a terrible fall, and probably being bedridden for a while, the king was anxious. Would he recover from the impact of this fall or would it lead to his death? To ascertain his fate, Ahaziah sent messengers to Baal-Zebub; ‘Will I die from this sickness or will i recover?
On the face of it, Ahaziah’s decision to confirm his prognosis may seem like the next best step, assuming he had sought help from healers, soothsayers, herbalists, etc. However God frowned at his decision as we see in 2 Kings chapter one verse 3…….
“But the angel of the Lord said to Elijah the Tishbite, “Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say to them, ‘ Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron?” II Kings 1:3
God’s message to Ahaziah may seem like a reprimand, but really it also shows God projecting Himself as the help Ahaziah should have sought. I hear God saying to the king in this verse; ‘‘I have been here all along, from the moment you fell down, through the days you reached out to the healers for help, when you started getting anxious, the times you stayed up at night wondering what next to do, etc…All this time, I was available to help you.’ But you didn’t come to me, you didn’t ask for my help.“
Dear friend, if you are currently in a seemingly hopeless situation that is threatening your peace, I write to remind you that you are not alone, God is with you. He is Your ever-present help!
If you can just whisper what you require help with today to Him, He will bring the help you need, and give you peace. For with God, nothing shall be impossible (Luke 1:37).
Shalom!
