It’s almost unbelievable to me that there could be situations in life when redundancy is better than complacency. Yet this is what the Lord Jesus seems to be saying in Revelations 3:15
“I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot.” Revelation 3:15 NKJV
When I read Revelations 3:15, three words come to my mind:
◦ Redundancy
◦ Complacency
◦ Zealousness
I am aware that there are varied definitions to these terminologies, below are the ones that capture the context and steer of this writeup.
Redundancy is the state of being no longer needed or useful.
Complacency is a feeling of calm satisfaction with one’s abilities or situation without an interest to try for more.
Zealousness means being very enthusiastic and eager, or showing passionate support for a person, cause, or ideal.
So……
A Zealous person is fervent, expends time and energy in support of a cause they believe strongly in.
A Redundant person is not satisfied with life, not enjoying the best from life, but yet not reaching for more. They are useless to a cause.
A Complacent person is satisfied with life, comfortable in his/her comfort zone without a motivation to aspire for more. Complacency needs be contrasted from contentment which is a state of being satisfied with what one has while still aspiring for more.
Complacent people neither contribute to, nor slow down a cause. They are unproductive.
In verse 17 of Revelations chapter 3 Jesus provides the reasons for a lukewarm or complacent attitude as a false sense of security.
“Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked” Revelation 3:17 NKJV
Jesus says it’s better to be redundant (Cold), so He knows you’re totally useless to kingdom cause than to be complacent or Lukewarm, (in a stable state of unproductiveness). Selah!
While it might seem that being cold is better than being lukewarm; giving no hope, no expectations, no disappointments, Jesus’ ultimate desire is for us to be zealous, fervently doing the work of the kingdom.
“As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent.” Revelation 3:19 NKJV
Shalom!
