This 5-part mini-bible study series, is based on Hebrews 4:15. So far, we have covered 5 points about temptations, and today, I conclude this series by looking at 7 biblical keys for dealing with temptations.
Below are the 5 points we have covered so far:
1. It is possible to be tempted and not sin.
2. Temptations don’t come from God
3. Temptations follow Desires or needs
4. Every Temptation aims to Take something away from you, it could be something you currently have Or it aims to cease, end, abort, thwart something in your future
5. TEMPTATIONS are inevitable in human existence.
You can find links to Parts 1-4, by following the Part 4 or Part 5.
“For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.” Hebrews 4:15, NKJV
Biblical keys for dealing with the temptations
- Confront Temptations with God’s Word
James 4:7 says;
“Submit yourselves then to God, resist the devil and he will flee from you”
How do we resist the devil? NKJV - Do Not Romance Temptations
The bible records that Portiphar’s wife temptation of Joseph to have sexual intercourse with her as persistent. She kept at it, ‘day after day‘.
As I read this in Genesis 39:10-11, I observe that the bible says that Joseph ‘kept out of her way as much as possible’.
“She kept putting pressure on Joseph day after day, but he refused to sleep with her, and he kept out of her way as much as possible.” Genesis 39:10-11 NLT
3. We have to Guard our heart with all diligence….
“Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flow the springs of life.” Proverbs 4:23 AMPC
4. Be confident of who you are, especially of your righteousness
Falling into temptations can be traumatic for a devoted Christian. The devil will want to keep you in guilt and condemnation. However, if you fall into temptations and sin, you must dust yourself, get up and continue your race.
We are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus; no guilt, no condemnation, no charge.
“My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. [2] And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.” I John 2:1-2 NKJV
5. Determine to Take and win the trophy for overcoming temptations.
There is a trophy for overcoming temptations.
James 1:12 says..
“Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.”
We make God proud when we overcome temptations.
6. Be PRAYERFUL,
• We don’t pray for temptations to go away. No, we confront them with God’s Word.
• So what do we pray about regarding temptations?
• We pray not to fall into temptations
“And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.” Matthew 6:13 NKJV
“Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Matthew 26:41 NKJV
Prayers help us see temptations as what they are, a trap to sin, and so we can easily avoid them.
7. Live a spirit filled life.
Galatians 5:16 NKJV
[16] I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
• Living a spirit filled life as to be a way of life for us
• A lifestyle
• A walk
• Spending time in God’s Word
• Praying in the Holy Ghost
• This must be our life.
These 7 biblical keys for dealing with temptations are discussed in more details in this video.
