Do you sometime wonder about the difference between tests, trials and temptations as used in the bible? Yes, sometimes these terms can seem confusing, well, relax, this article will help bring some clarity.
These 3 terms are different in what they represent, however there is an intersection between them. Whether we are dealing with tests, trials or temptations, God wants us to come out victorious. And the way to victory with these 3 things is the application of God’s word. So to be successful in tests, trials and temptations we must have God’s word in our heart (Psalm 119:11), in our mouth (Matthew 4:4-11) and our choice of actions must align with God’s word. There is a reward for passing every test of faith (James 1:12).
TESTS
Tests come from God and they are intended to check our confidence and trust in God and God’s Word. Tests aim to reveal or loyalty (or lack of it) to God. God can test our faithfulness, character, obedience, etc Examples of tests in the Bible; Abraham (Genesis 22:1); Jesus’ testing of His disciples on their understanding of divine provision and supply (John 6:6). God doesn’t cause trials and temptations, however, He permits them.
TRIALS
Trials can be troubles, tribulations or persecutions; they do not emanate from God, but are orchestrated by the devil and his agents with the intention to destabilize, distract, or shake our belief. Even though trials do not come from God, however from God’s perspective, they are tests of our faith (James 1:2-4). God wants us to endure and be victorious through trials because they help us grow. Trials though intended for bad by the enemy, help us develop and grow in patience, endurance and perseverance (Romans 5:3-5, James 1:3). Often, trials can be preparations for bigger tasks ahead. Examples of trials in the bible include the experience of Daniel in the lions den (Daniel 6:14-23) and Daniel and his friends in the fiery furnace (Daniel 3:13-30), apostle Pauls’ affictions in Second Corinthians 1:8-11.
TEMPTATIONS
Temptations are traps and snares set by the devil to cause us to sin against against God. Unlike trials which develops strength of character in us, temptations aim to make us sin against God. God tests us, but He never tempts us (James 1;13). Temptations are traps set by the devil to make us Sin Against God.
I think that ultimately temptations aim to steal something valuable from us. The primary purpose of Jesus’ temptations was to get Him to obey the devil and like Adam in the Garden of Eden, make Jesus a subject of the devil (Romans 6:16). Examples of temptations in the Bible include the temptations of Jesus (Matthew 4:4-11), Joseph’s temptation (Genesis 39:6-9), David’s temptations (2 Samuel 11:2-5).
By reviewing the above examples of temptations, we can see what to do to overcome them and the choices that can lead anyone headlong into them. Jesus overcame His temptations by speaking an IT IS WRITTEN back at the devil, Joseph overcame his temptation by reverencing God and putting Him above his desires; “how can I do this great wickedness and SIN AGAINST GOD“.
Conclusion
The Bible tells is in Matthew 4:1 that the HOLY SPIRIT led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Why would the Holy Spirit do that?
The enemy doesn’t send us trials and temptations with good intentions, however, God walks with us through them, helping us overcome temptations, and to grow through trials, by the way of His word. This is our confidence; that God is with us through the fire or waters. Halleluyah!
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the flame scorch you.” Isaiah 43:2
“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” I Corinthians 10:13
This has been on my mind for a while now, imagine the excitement to read up immediately.
In summary, tests are opportunities for growth and evaluation, trials are challenges that build endurance and character, and temptations are enticements to sin or stray from God’s path.
Understanding the distinctions between these terms can help in interpreting biblical narratives and applying their lessons to personal faith journeys.
