We read the story of the rich man and Lazarus in the gospel according to Luke; Luke chapter 16, verses 19-31…..
“But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate” Luke 16:20
Starting with a BUT, tells us there is a connection and contrast from prior or previous verses before verse 20. Yes we see mention of a poor man positioned at the gate of a rich man in verse 20, however, verse 19, sheds more light on verse 20…
“There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day.” Luke 16:19 NKJV
It is interesting how some other bible translations describe this rich man…….
- “he lived in luxury”,
- ‘he was expensively dressed with the latest fashions’,
- ‘he reveled, feasted and made merry in splendour every single day’,
- ‘he wore expensive clothes and ate the best food every day’,
- ‘he enjoyed all the best things of life’.
- ‘he was wasting his days in conspicuous consumption’.
Interesting isn’t it?
In summary, the rich man’s affluence was reflected in his dressing, food choices and lifestyle.
I have to note though, that one translation described what was described as luxury as waste (selah).
Why Was Lazarus Positioned at The Rich Man’s Gate?
Because the people who dropped him there thought the rich man could take care of him.
