A rash promise is a hasty, reckless or indiscreet commitment to do something for someone else. A rash promise becomes a vow when it is made under oath.
In order to elaborate on King Herod’s bewilderment at Jesus’s miracles, Mark narrates the story of the beheading of John the Baptist from hindsight.
It would seem that Herod was quietly hoping that by some miracle and to help his conscience heal, John the Baptist was back to life (Mark 6:14-29).
John was beheaded in prison following Herod’s command. Acting against his will and from a point of deep sorrow and regret, Herod ordered for John to be killed in fulfilment of his hasty pledge to Herodias’ daughter.
The young lady’s dance before the king and his guests had pleased the king so much that he hurriedly committed to giving her WHATEVER she asked for; upto half of his Kingdom. Acting on her mother’s advice, the lady asked for John the Baptist’ head on a platter. The king had no choice but to oblige her. He had to honor the rash promise he made.
What sort of dance did this lady dance to please a man this much?
A promise is a promise and so sadly John was beheaded, buried, while heartless Herodias rejoiced that her self-acclaimed enemy has been eliminated.
God doesn’t make rash promises. His Word is His bond. If a mere man like Herod would kill, and that against his will, just because he had committed to a pledge, how much more can God keep His Word?
First Kings 8:5 says…..
“Blessed be the Lord, who has given rest to His people Israel, according to all that He promised; not one word has failed of all His good promise, which He promised through Moses His servant.
And Joshua 21:45 reads….
“Not one of the good promises which the Lord had made to the house of Israel failed; all came to pass.”
Friends…”not one word has failed of all His good promises”…..”all came to pass”
God keeps a careful watch over His Word to perform it. In Christ Jesus, He fulfilled all His promise to mankind.
