“In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike.”
Matthew 5:45 NLT
One of the greatest and exciting revelations I have received in my Christian walk is that “I am a Child of God“. The Most High God, the Creator of the heavens and the earth is my Father! There’s nothing more honorable than this; I am born of God! Halleluyah!
The Father loves me, He watches over me, He looks out for me, He has the best plan for my life. I am truly special.
And you are special too, because He is your Father also. For as many as have received Jesus as Lord and Saviour, enjoy the Fatherhood of God. Halleluyah!
In Mathew chapter 5, the Lord Jesus shares some characteristics of the Father, and I find it very interesting that He thought I could act just as the Father does…
“You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For He gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike. If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that. But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.”
Matthew 5:43-48 NLT
Love your enemies…..Pray for those who persecute you. When you do this, you are acting as a true child of the Father.
Why so?
Because the Father is good and kind to all (the good, the bad and ugly). He is love by nature and so He (effortlessly) loves unconditionally.
Jesus was an exemplary leader; always practicing what He taught His disciples to do. And in Luke 23:33-34, we see Him, praying for forgiveness for those who crucified Him…
“And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left. Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” And they divided His garments and cast lots.”
Luke 23:33-34 NKJV
So yes, I am forever thankful to be a child of God, to be loved, nurtured, shielded, provided for by Him, etc. But then I also want to be a True Reflection of my Father..
I want to love like He loves, not only those who love me, but even those who hate me. I want to pray for everyone, not just my friends and family, but also for those who strongly oppose and persecute me. I want to be kind to everyone; not just to those who extend kind gestures towards me, but also to those whom I see working so hard to undo me. I want to do good to everyone, everywhere. I want to be a true child of my Father.
True children of the Father are just as kind, forgiving, generous, good, just as He is.
Are you one of them?
Jesus thought you could be….
