The primary purpose of the Sabbath was for man to REST and get REFRESHED (Exodus 31:14-17).
Jesus was often challenged for WORKING on the Sabbath instead of observing the “law of the Sabbath to rest” as seen in Exodus 31:14-17.
Jesus’s response on one of such occasions in Mark 2:23-27, throws a different light on the Sabbath than what was practiced under the law.
He said…..
“And He said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.”
Mark 2:27-28 KJV
What did Jesus mean by “the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath?”
I believe He meant- I am in Control of my Sabbath (my day of rest).
I believe that Jesus was saying; the law is being done away with, so as regards your time of Rest/Refreshing, you choose when to do it, that’s within your control.
Work any time and rest when you need to. Work when there’s a NEED to work and rest when you need to. Seize every opportunity to do good to those who need it.
To buttress His point, Jesus cited the example of David who chose to meet a NEED to feed himself and his men rather than keep the law.
Looking at Exodus 31:14-17 again and following in the Creator’s step, it would seem that Work/Rest Day ratio should be 6:1. That is, for every 6 days’ work, you should get a minimum of 1day rest.
………………..
“But as for you, say to the Israelites, ‘You shall most certainly observe My Sabbaths, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, so that you may know [without any doubt] and acknowledge that I am the Lord who sanctifies you and sets you apart [for Myself]. Therefore, you shall keep the Sabbath, for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it must be put to death; for whoever does work on the Sabbath, that person (soul) shall be cut off from among his people [excluding him from the atonement made for them]. For six days work may be done, but the seventh is the Sabbath of complete rest, sacred to the Lord; whoever does work on the Sabbath day must be put to death. So the Israelites shall observe the Sabbath, to celebrate the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant.’ It is a sign between Me and the Israelites forever; for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day He ceased and was refreshed.”
