“Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.”
1 Timothy 6:12 KJV
To fight is to struggle to overcome, eliminate, or to prevent something or someone. It is a violent confrontation or struggle usually with an intention to win.
Contrary to the above dictionary definition of fight, Ephesians 6:12 tells us that as Christians we are in no physical combat with any human….
“For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.“
Ephesians 6:12 NLT
We are in a spiritual warfare, it is a fight of faith; faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ. We fight from a standpoint of victory because Jesus already won on our behalf.
It is a fixed fight because we know the end from the beginning, we know the results in advance.
It is a good fight because the victory has already been won.
It is a fight of faith therefore our strategy is the faith strategy; faith believes and speaks! We believe we’ve already won, therefore we say so.
Who do we fight?
The fight of faith is not against flesh and blood (humans), not against your ‘terrible’ neighbour, boss, colleague, etc. We don’t fight people, we love them with the love of God (Romans 13:8)
Our fight is against (i) Principalities (ii) Powers (iii) Rulers of the darkness of this age (iv) Spiritual hosts of wickedness in high places (Ephesians 6:12).
We fight to (i) pull down Strongholds of human reasonings and theories (ii) cast down false Arguments (iii) destroy every proud obstacle Against the Knowledge of God (iv) we capture every Thought and bring it to the obedience of Christ, and we (v) punish every disobedience as long as our own obedience to the Word is fulfilled (2 Corinthians 10:4-6). We declare every contrary counsel against us null and void. We declare that no weapon fashioned against us will prosper and condemn every tongue that rises against us in judgement.
So you see that it’s a fixed fight because according to Colossians 2:15, Jesus already triumphed over our enemies. He stripped them of every power, parading them as defeated and powerless (Colossians 2:15).
“and having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.“
Colossians 2:15 KJV
John tells us why Jesus was manifested, why Jesus came to earth….that He (Jesus) might DESTROY the works of the devil (of stealing, killing and destroying).
“…….. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.”
I John 3:8 NKJV
And we know that right now, Jesus is seated at the right hand of the Father, meaning He delivered on His mandate. He destroyed the works of darkness. He is seated at the right hand of the Father in glory and we are seated with Him, far above all our enemies (Ephesians 1:20-21, Ephesians 2:5). So when we fight, we fight from the standpoint of victory, for we are more than conquerors.
How do we fight the good fight of faith?
We fight with the sword of the Spirit (the sharpest of all swords), that is, the living, powerful Word of God (Hebrews 4:12, Ephesians 6:17).
We wield the sword of the Spirit by saying what the Word says of us. We maintain our confessions of faith in every situation of life. We agree with God by saying what He says concerning us.
We withstand by putting on the whole armor of God as we profess that we are born of God. We continue to confess that we are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus free from every form of condemnation. We declare that we have Jesus’s peace on every side and commit to sharing the gospel of peace. We declare the infallibility of the Word of God and anchor our faith on its integrity. And we remain persuaded that the Father’s faithfulness is sure. Halleluyah!
We don’t give up, we don’t give in. And just like Apostle Paul, at the end of our faith walk, we would be able to confidently declare…..
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
II Timothy 4:7 NKJV
Fight the good fight of faith, hold tightly to eternal life.
