The Merriam-Webster’ dictionary defines meekness as: “the quality or state of being meek: a mild, moderate, humble, or submissive quality.” Meekness is an ornament of great price.
Interestingly, this dictionary definition is quite close to the Biblical meaning of meekness which is:
…….quietness and gentleness of spirit. An inward gracing and temper of spirit that manifests physically.
“but let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.”
1 Peter 3:4 KJV
As we see in Peter 3: 4, meekness is something that is PRECIOUS to God; something of great value and worth…
Meekness is a good virtue and part of the fruit of the recreated human spirit (Galatians 5:22-23, Colossians 3:12-14). Interestingly, meekness is often mentioned alongside humility, a quality of deep reverence for God and expression of love towards fellow men. A humble person puts God and others before himself.
See what the Vines Expository dictionary says about meekness…..
“Described negatively, meekness is opposite to self-assertiveness and self-interest; it is equanimity of spirit that is neither elated nor cast down, simply because it is not occupied with self at all.”
Selflessness is a central attribute of meekness.
Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ was described as meek and gentle, lowly in heart (II Corinthians 10:1;Matthew 11:29). We too can express a gentle and quiet spirit. Halleluyah!
One of the first things I heard God say to me was; ‘in quietness is your strength’. I find that I am distracted, disconnected, dissatisfied and restless whenever I lose this quietness of spirit. But I’ve also learned to regain it by spending time in the Word and walking with the Holy Spirit.
And when I talk about spending time in the Word and walking with the Holy Spirit, I mean studying and meditating on the Word and praying in the Spirit for myself, rather than for the purpose of ministering to others. Because I’ve also come to know that you can be soooo inside the Word but the Word is not in you. You can become disconnected from the Holy Spirit while yet sharing the Word with others.
Brethren, we should deliberately choose meekness. The Bible says there is an abundance of peace for the meek and they inherit the earth Psalms 37:11). If you will embrace meekness today, you will enjoy an abundance of peace.
Halleluyah!!!
