“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
II Timothy 1:7 NKJV
Apostle Paul writes this encouraging portion of scripture to Timothy from prison. The aim; to inspire courage, boldness and determination in Timothy. To assure Timothy that although he (Paul) was physically not present with him, he was neither alone nor helpless. Paul reminds Timothy of the positive force of the indwelling spirit in him; the Spirit of love, of power and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:3-7 ERV). As Christians, we should be enjoying a sound mind.
Question: If Timothy received the Spirit of love, power and a sound mind, why is Paul calling his attention to resist the spirit of fear?
Second Timothy 1:7a says; ‘God has not given us the spirit of fear’. Two things to quickly pick up from here;
- Fear is a spirit
- Fear is not from God
If God did not give us the spirit of fear, then where did fear come from?
God created man as a perfectly rational being; with the capacity to think, reason and understand himself and others. In Genesis 2:19-20, we see Adam successfully naming every beast of the field and every bird of the air that God created. This Adam, had the spirit of God working in him; he had a sound mind. However, when we put the intellectually sound Adam who displayed great confidence and brilliance in naming every creature made by God against the fearful Adam in Genesis 3:10 (below), you cannot but notice an aberration..
“So he said, I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.”
Genesis 3:10 NKJV
So Adam didn’t fear the lion, the tiger, he wasn’t intimidated by the huge elephant, then boom, suddenly he is afraid of God! The same God that communicated with him regularly. What happened? By ceding authority to the devil, Adam succumbed to his influence. Fear came in because evil came in stringing along with it, corruption of the spirit-man. So until Adam let the devil into his life, he had a clear thinking mind that was devoid of evil.
Why are we to resist the spirit of fear?
Fear is a spirit and it is not from God. Fear is one of the inhibitory and limiting tools of the devil. Fear torments and intends to ultimately cripple someone rendering the person powerless (I John 4:18). Evil distorts the normal working of the mind and can make it act irrationally.
What fear have you been accommodating? fear of death? fear of what tomorrow will bring? fear of failure? fear of what will become of your children? fear of bad things happening to you? fear of not successfully delivering on a Godly project?
God did not give us the spirit of fear. You are of God, not of the devil. The Spirit of God is at work in you- the Spirit of LOVE, the spirit POWER and of a Sound Mind. Resist any other contrary spirit…
“We received the Spirit that is from God, not the spirit of the world. We received God’s Spirit so that we can know all that God has given us.”
1 Corinthians 2:12 ERV
We have the Spirit of LOVE
We are born of God, God is love, and so we are love (I John 4:8). The love of God has been shed abroad; abundantly poured in our hearts, and it pours from us to others (Romans 5:5 AMP). We are distinguished and identified as Christ’ disciple because we love (John 13:35). The Spirit at work in us is the Spirit of love, not of fear. And as we continue by faith in the living Word of God, our love is perfected; for there is no fear in love (I John 4:18, I John 2:5).
We have the Spirit of POWER
Yes we do! According to the exceeding, immeasurable, unlimited all-surpassing greatness of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead (Ephesians 1:19-20). That same POWER is at work in us.
We have a sound mind
Not of irrational thinking and it’s subsequent behavioral expressions, no, we have the spirit of a sound mind, of self-control, self-discipline, of peace, meekness and calmness.
I have a sound mind! Halleluyah!!
By faith I declare that God has not given me the spirit of fear. No! I have the Spirit of Love, of Power and of a Sound mind.
Thank You Jesus!
