If you are ever in doubt of what makes the list of Acts of God, John 10:10 would help you…
“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”
John 10:10 NKJV
In this scripture, Jesus draws a clear distinction between Him (God) and the thief (the devil). According to Jesus, the thief’s sole purpose for ‘ continually coming’ around people is to steal from them (their identity, rights and privileges), to kill them, and to destroy them (destroy their destiny). On the other hand, the works of God are identifiable with life and life more abundantly. Meaning also that anything that steals from you, or aims to steal from you or to destroy you is not from God (selah).
While we may not physically see the devil, Bible accounts of his works reveals that one of his modus operandi is to twist and thwart the Truth (the Word) creating doubt, fear and unbelief.
In Hosea 4:6, God says the reason His people are destroyed is because they lack knowledge of Him and His law (His Word)…they do not have any relationship with Him.
“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.”
Hosea 4:6 NKJV
The primary way we know God and form an intimate relationship with Him is through His Word.
So while John 10:10 tells us who the destroyer is, Hosea 4:6, tells us why the enemy succeeds with destroying people.
From these 2 scriptures we can imply that in order not to be outsmarted by the devil, a good knowledge of the Word is required. Meaning that anyone conversant with and knowledgeable about the Word and it’s right application is unlikely to fall prey to the devil’s tricks.
In chapter 4 of his book, Matthew provides us with an account of Jesus’s temptation by the devil and how Jesus overcame by blocking and deflecting all the fiery darts from the devil with an ‘it is written‘.
And in his letter to the Ephesians, Apostle Paul again draws attention to the one effective spiritual weapon to be trusted and used at all times- the Sword of the Spirit- The Word of God.
“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God”
Ephesians 6:17 NKJV
Question: How knowledgeable are you about the Word of God? When the devil comes at you, do you become crippled with fear and hopelessness or do you pull out (from your spirit), your spiritual sword?- either deliberately or by the help of the Holy Spirit… Has the enemy succeeded in creating unbelief and doubt about the Word in you…do you believe the Word of God as true? Don’t let him.
If this strategy of the sword of the Spirit worked for Jesus against the devil, make no mistake about it, it will also work for you and I.
