One of the most disappointing things for me as I began travelling to different parts of the world, was the realization that apart from culture, humans were essentially the same everywhere. From Asia, to Europe, America, Africa, and all over, people strive to satisfy basic human needs using different (sometimes similar) methods. Guess I was looking forward to adding another meaning to life…
When you read Matthew 6:25-34, you may not be wrong in assuming that in Jesus’ time, human needs likely lined up with Marlow’s Hierarchy.
“Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?”
Matthew 6:25 NKJV
Food, shelter and clothing were top priority then. In present day world, that list has extended to include; security, sleep, a sense of belonging, love, etc.
If there is anything to learn from the COVID-19 pandemic experience, it is that this was a time to reorder and redefine basic human needs. I assume you did that and landed a different reality…
Truth is, as things gradually return back to normal, that reality may change again and with that change could come worry, anxiety, fears, depression and restlessness.
Irrespective of the time, Jesus’ command in Mathew 6;34 still stands…
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.“
Matthew 6:34 NKJV
Do not worry about the bills, rent, school fees, how to replace your rickety car, your health, teenage child, spouse, etc, etc.
Jesus says to you today; ‘do not worry about tomorrow‘.
Worry doesn’t ever fix anything. It gets you preoccupied, distracted, weighed down, depressed, it entangles you completely, chokes the Word out of you, and it can make you sick. Worry steals from you (Matthew 13:22, Matthew 6:28-29).
“Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?“
Matthew 6:27 NKJV
Now, here is the good news; if you have found the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, then you are God’s responsibility and God takes care of His own.
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
Matthew 6:33 NKJV
For in this Kingdom worry has no place because we know to ask and receive, to seek and find, to knock and access open doors (Matthew 7:7). We know to say, believe and have, to speak to the mountain believing, and to see it move (Mark 11:23). We know to win by faith.
