For everyone, and particularly for Christians, one of the important lessons from the current global pandemic should be a reassessment of “needs” as against “wants“. I believe that is a lesson to not forget in a hurry.
I am thankful to Dr. Nnesochi Offor for her lifesaving article “COVID-19:Make Every Dollar Count” which aptly captures basic human needs.
On my personal list, and in no particular order, everyone needs food/water, shelter, family and other relationships, shelter, basic clothing.
Ofcourse, we all realize that having God in our lives is nothing compared to having the above listed needs. He is the essence of our being.
In Philippians 4:18, Apostle Paul boasts of having All things and Abounding.
“But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God.”
Philippians 4:18 KJV
I can only imagine what all things meant at the time to Paul….Oh! But it was certainly not a fleet of cars or private jets, not mansions, etc
By definition, abound simply means to have something in large numbers or copious amounts. So whatever Paul’s all things represented at the time, he thought he had them in abundance; for himself and others.
Can we briefly reflect on the things that would have meant all things to us before the onset of COVID-19? Looking back now, can we say like Paul that we indeed abounded and still abound?
We may have events, experiences, encounters etc about this season of life we’re better off forgetting, but may we never forget that the most important things of life are actually simple and are many times, available (and abounding) to us as Children of God.
“as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,“
II Peter 1:3 NKJV
