“The ants are a people not strong, Yet they prepare their food in the summer;‘ Proverbs 30:25 NKJV
“A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself, But the simple pass on and are punished.” Proverbs 22:3 https://my.bible.com/bible/114/PRO.22.3
The emergence of the Corona virus pandemic is of concern to us all, causing devastation globally in all ramifications of life- human, material and financial. This is an unprecedented time in our lives and so we must make unprecedented decisions to be able to weather the storm. Taking a cue from Proverbs 22:3, in order to pass on any future suffering or punishment, we’re better off aligning with the ‘prudent man’ in Proverbs 22″3. Here are a few things to consider….
Let go of non-essentials
At times like this it is important to prioritize and identify what are needs (essentials) and what are wants (non-essentials).
A. Essentials….
Food– It is necessary to stock up as much as is possible with non-perishables and some quantity of perishables so that in this period of lock-down, market and border closures, finding what to eat is not a problem.
Medications -These too are essential, especially for those that have to be on a daily or regular regime, stock up where possible since there is a possibility of scarcity.
Accommodation – If you live in rented accommodation, it is a priority to set aside your rent, don’t go overboard while trying to stock up. Do not over-spend on other needs while forgetting about this. Shelter is a basic human need,
Clean Water -This is important too, it helps us maintain good sanitary conditions in our homes preventing spread of disease.
School fees – This pandemic will eventually be over and life returns to normal, be prepared ahead for usual commitments.
B. Non-essentials……
Buying or sewing new clothes is not essential now. Purchase of certain items, like electronics can be deferred. And major financial investments, should be well analyzed before commitment.
Reach out To Others
Nothing is too small, reach out to those in need with what you can. Many people are finding this to be a very difficult time financially, try and assist in whatever way you can, even if it is to share a meal. Some people find it embarrassing to ask for help, but appreciate it nonetheless when given. Be sensitive. The story of Elijah and the widow of Zarephath in 1 Kings 17:7-16, teaches us that no matter how little we think we have, there are blessings to receive from sharing – reach out and touch somebody’s life!
Save for the rainy day
Savings are essential for everyone, no matter how much or little your income, savings need to be made. Financial experts recommend that a minimum of 10% of your income should be set aside as savings. Consider this and plan appropriately. Economic experts are uncertain as to the impact this pandemic is going to have on the global financial market. There will be some kind of recession but to what extent no one can say since the exact timeline of the pandemic is unknown. Operate in wisdom. Even now, in the face of current difficulties, it is still advisable to make some savings.
“Listen to counsel and receive instruction, That you may be wise in your latter days” Proverbs 19:20. NKJV.
Trust God, He Will Enable Us Weather The Storm.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation by prayer & petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Phil 4:6-7.
We must NEVER loose sight of the fact that God is ABLE to see us through these times,. Nor must we allow fear overcome us, God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power, love and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).
We should also heed recommendations of Government and NCDC – Stay at home as much as possible, observe social distancing when outdoors, wash hands frequently with soap and clean water or use hand sanitizer where available.
God bless and please stay safe.
………………….
Dear Dr. Offor. Thank you very much Ma for this timely write-up. Personally, I am going to look at that list of Essentials and Non-Essentials again. Some things have to give. …….. 🙂 God bless you ma
Friends, let me add that this is not the time to withhold tithes and offerings. The temptation to do so may come but we must remember to put God first. If we are ultimately trusting God to see us through these times despite our best endeavours, we must also trust Him with our tithes and offerings. Giving to others may also be better executed through monthly planning and budgeting. This saves us from emotional giving in the face of almost overwhelming request for help from people. It is impossible to try to meet every request for help at this time. But remember; ‘There is a Lazarus at Your Gate‘. Let’s stay sensitive.
